The Council Says it Has Questions
The Chicago politics of public safety were on display for those paying attention.
The nation's founding fathers saw local government as the level of government closest to the people - and best suited to address issues like crime and public safety. There is often discussion at how the founders would be very disappointed in how the federal government has grown and taken to itself powers intended for the states - and the people. But, in looking at the failures in many of the nation's largest cities to protect residents from crime - the founders would likely be very disappointed with the failings of many of today's local governments as well. Here -- as case in point from Chicago.
One political move, topped by an opposing political move, and then acknowledged in a political response.
